Where to Get Protein for Vegans in Hong Kong?

I used to be a vegan when I was studying in Amsterdam and when I got back to Hong Kong, I realised how limited the options were for vegans here! As I remembered supermarkets selling a variety of vegan meat that were not overly expensive in the Netherlands, Hong Kong’s vegan meat market seemed to be still at the development stage. This article will help vegans source their proteins and hit fitness goals even in a vegan-unfriendly city!

1. Green Common

Official website: https://www.greencommon.com/

Green Common is the first place I would go to as a vegan as they have quite a few selections and I am sure you can find something that can spice up your meal prep! You can find a lot of omni meat, which are vegan meats. They have meats that imitate fish, chicken, pork and beef! Apart from that, you can find some vegan burger patties and vegan dumplings! The prices are fair and competitive. They deliver to you if you order online and want to save the hassle of visiting one of their branches!

Green Common restaurants serve omni foods as well! If you want a quick bite, Green Common restaurants are affordable, efficient and delicious! Highly recommend it!

2. Plant Sifu

Plant Sifu is a new brand that makes tasty plant-based food! Right now, they only have a few products which are mostly dumplings and siomai (technically also a dumpling?). Their link tree shows you all the shops that sell their products and they are also available on HKTV Mall.

They advertised that their products have no MSG, preservatives, additives and colouring as well! The brand is developed and made in Hong Kong. So, if you want to support local businesses, you can try to get your hands on some Plant Sifu!

3. Nutrition Kitchen

Nutrition Kitchen is a meal prep service for those who do not have time to do meal prep but want fantastic flavours at their doorstep! They provide a menu for you to choose from and you can simply select vegan or vegetarian to check out what kind of meals they serve! Greg says the services are worth it as they put your nutritional needs in mind while designing each meal. Their macros (carbohydrates, protein, fat and calories) are all listed in the menu so you can choose the best option for your fitness goals! Alternatively, you can also take a quiz so they can help you find the right meal.

4. My Protein

Official website: https://www.myprotein.com.hk/

My Protein is our go-to website for vegan protein powder! Sometimes, you may find a good protein snack and products too! However, they do not only see vegan protein products so please check if it is vegan friendly before purchasing. My personal favourite is the vegan vanilla protein powder as it does not taste weird and it does not give me any digestive problems. Whey protein just makes us feel gassy a lot.

5. Supplement stores, online shops

Most supplement stores now stock up on vegan protein options! You just have to ask the staff as they may not display them, or the vegan products are put in obscure corners. HKTV Mall also offers vegan products that are delivered to your doorstep if you purchase over a certain amount.

Conclusion

Even though the options are more limited than the meaty options in Hong Kong, it is entirely possible to get lean with vegan protein! If you are vegetarian, Buddhist restaurants offer a great variety of tofu that resembles meat. However, they can get pretty oily! Hopefully you can find a store that sells food that tickles your pickle.
