Powerlifting community in Hong Kong is growing bigger and bigger! However, it is important to acknowledge that powerlifting knowledge specifically about this city is not widely accessible to people who want to start or just moved to Hong Kong. In this article, we are going to recommend visiting one of these gyms to start your powerlifting journey in Hong Kong and join our thriving community!
Powerlifting community in Hong Kong
According to my own experience, everyone is very willing to help and people who go to the same gym tend to form a community. Lifters also form friendships after participating in powerlifting meets! Everyone I met was friendly and only added value to my own growth as a lifter. You won’t really see people that are hostile per se. So, reach out to these gyms and start lifting with the strongest people in Hong Kong!

CSA is arguably one of the most recognizable independent gyms in Hong Kong. They have been hosting powerlifting competitions and their athletes are seasoned lifters on the platform. The gym’s culture tends to be quite fun-oriented and at least half of the people who train there participate in competitions. You can find competition equipment if you want to test out your one rep max!
Most people who come here have some knowledge of working out so I highly suggest beginners to check out their coaching service. If you want to try out a new programme but don’t want to commit, you can also download their free powerlifting programme on their website! (https://www.classicsstrengthacademy.com/programs)

They brand themselves as a power-building gym as they have athletes that train for bodybuilding and powerlifting. HOURX opened in 2021 and already established a solid community! You can notice their athletes in powerlifting competitions. I do notice their community having a huge age diversity and they are welcoming to new joiners! With regular SBD classes and technique workshops, HOURX is beginner friendly and you should check out their instagram for most updated information!

EXZ is one of the newer powerlifting gyms in Hong Kong, but their athletes are by no means weak. EXZ has been training athletes for powerlifting competitions and you can see some strong people training there! They also have powerlifting coaches that can guide you into the sport and help you with your meet preparations! Their instagram posts latest updates and athletes recaps, which can be very encouraging for new lifters! They have 6 week powerlifting programs that provide 1 on 1 training sessions and you can expect weekly programming as well.
Q&A:
- Do I need to have all my equipment before I visit the gym?
No! I think as a beginner, it is important to nail the form down and be confident even without all the belts, sleeves and wraps. I do recommend getting some flat shoes (converse or an average adidas shoe with no pad will do). Flat shoes are recommended because you want to get a good balance and not tip forward especially when you are doing squats! Gyms like CSA also have some extra leather buckle belts for you to use if you are just trying out.
- Should I get a coach to start powerlifting?
I highly recommend getting a coach that has powerlifting experience to guide you through. It is important to note that there are online coaching services available so you would not be limited to the coach pool in Hong Kong if you are open to that possibility! A powerlifting coach will design your program, tinker your form and introduce new techniques for you to try out.
- Can I do powerlifting in commercial gyms?
Yes and no. In gyms like Go24 where they have deadlift platforms and a rather open gym culture, you can absolutely hit PRs and get stronger over time. However, some commercial gyms do not allow you to properly deadlift. Or at least ask you to place mats on deadlift platforms which can cause injuries. I suggest looking up reviews or visiting the gym before committing!
